TERAGRAM TAXONOMY MANAGER TM

The Teragram Taxonomy Manager Software organizes information, documents or Websites using an easy and intuitive browsable hierarchical directory. Directories have been very successful organizing information found on the Web; they provide a way for Web users to access information in an organized way.

The Teragram Taxonomy Manager can be used out-of-the-box or as a software development toolkit (SDK). The out-of-the-box application enables fast and easy deployment. The SDK allows you to build complex applications using the directory capability.

Accessing information through a directory can be done intuitively. However, the importance of directories has also grown beyond organizing the Word-Wide-Web (WWW). Companies with large Intranets, as well as companies providing very large information to the outside, find that a directory provides an efficient way to link users with relevant links.

Traditional Constraints

One difference between popular World-Wide-Web directories and directories that companies want to build is the fact that the WWW directories are usually built entirely by hand. In other words, each category will have its own editor or set of editors that will be responsible for the content on this category. While this solution generally provides very high quality data organization; it has two main drawbacks:

  • The cost of building a good directory may be prohibitive because of the labor involved;
  • The speed at which the directory can be updated with new data is limited by the speed at which new information can be processed.
Ease of use

There are three options enabling you to easily build a taxonomy. First, the Teragram Taxonomy Manager allows the tree to be built automatically. Second, the directory administrator can also write the rules that will define the type of document that falls into each category of the taxonomy tree. Rules describing which document belongs to a category are similar to search engine queries, but are more expansive. The third technique used to automatically build a directory is to build a model, or an initial directory, with some documents in each predefined category. Teragram's Categorizer uses this model to develop and build a taxonomy.

However, it is also necessary to be able to continue to build directory content by hand. Teragram's Taxonomy Manager offers the possibility of mixing the previous three approaches to build a directory. Further, taxonomy administration can be facilitated by leveraging The Teragram Taxonomy Mapping solution.

Important features of the product are:

  • Full tree structure with symbolic links;
  • Each category can contain an arbitrary number of documents or links;
  • Category content can be built by hand;
  • Category content can be built through hand-written rules associated to each category;
  • Category content can be built through automatic categorization;
  • Simple category building and maintenance;
  • Efficient implementation (accessing a directory primarily consists of accessing cached pages);
